Semrush alternatives: what each costs and does better

Semrush's cheapest SEO plan costs $139/month, and a lot of people paying for it use two or three of its tools. Below are five alternatives, what each one replaces, and what it costs to let an AI agent use it, because that's where Semrush's pricing surprises people most. Prices come from each vendor's pricing and developer docs as of September 2026, billed monthly unless noted.

Why people look for a Semrush alternative

Semrush covers more of marketing than any other tool on this list. The catch is that $139/month only gets you the entry point, and several of the things people think of as "Semrush" cost extra.

The entry plan has no AI visibility. The SEO plan covers keyword research, position tracking, and site audits. AI visibility tracking starts on the Starter plan at $199/month, and so does MCP access (more on that below).

History starts at Pro+. Seeing how a domain's rankings changed over time needs Pro+ at $299/month, more than double the entry price.

Competitor traffic data is a separate product. Traffic estimates, channel breakdowns across eight sources, and competitors' top pages live in the Traffic & Market toolkit, which Semrush sells separately at $289/month. Add it to the SEO plan and you're paying $428/month. The Local and Content toolkits are sold separately too.

Seats add up. Extra users start at $45/month each, so a three-person team on the SEO plan pays $229/month before any toolkit.

You pay for the suite, not the work. Most people use two or three tools and pay the same fee whether they ran 5 lookups that month or 500.

What Semrush's MCP limits mean for an AI agent

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude call a tool directly. If you want an agent doing your Semrush research, the limits matter more than the dashboard:

  • Not on the entry plan. The $139 SEO plan has no MCP access. It starts on Semrush One Starter at $199/month (the older SEO Classic Pro and Guru plans include it too).
  • 50,000 units a month. Every MCP-eligible plan includes 50,000 API units that renew with your subscription. Buying more, in packages starting at 2 million units, is only possible on Semrush One Advanced ($549/month) or SEO Classic Business.
  • Billing by the line. Semrush charges per row returned. A domain's organic keywords cost 10 units per line (50 for historical data), backlinks 45 units per line, and referring domains 40. So 50,000 units buys about 5,000 keyword rows or about 1,100 backlinks a month.
  • Traffic data needs another subscription. Traffic Analytics and market data over MCP require a separate Trends API plan.
  • No first-party data. Semrush's dashboard can connect Google Analytics and Search Console, but its MCP server doesn't expose that data to your agent.

Here's how fast that goes. Ask an agent to "pull the top 1,000 keywords for my three biggest competitors" and it spends 30,000 units, 60% of the month, on one prompt. And agents rarely stop at one pull. They research more deeply than a person does: pulling more keywords, checking who ranks for each one, and cross-referencing competitors. That takes more calls, but it's why the output is better. Under per-line billing, every extra row eats into a 50,000-unit month, so the more thorough the research, the sooner you run out.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs is the closest like-for-like swap for Semrush, and its link index is the reason people pick it. Lite costs $129/month and includes 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 6 months of history, and MCP access, $70/month less than the cheapest Semrush plan with MCP.

What you give up: Lite is one user, and each extra seat costs $40/month. History is capped at 6 months. PPC research is thinner than Semrush's. Ahrefs' MCP also meters agents, just differently: 200,000 units a month, each row billed by the fields requested, and at most 100 rows per request on Lite.

SE Ranking

If rank tracking is the Semrush tool you use most, SE Ranking gives you four times as much of it for less. Core costs $129/month ($103.20 billed annually) and tracks 2,000 keywords daily across 10 projects, against Semrush's 500. MCP access comes with Core, so you don't pay $60/month extra for it the way you do moving from Semrush's SEO plan to Starter.

What you give up: its keyword and backlink databases are smaller than Semrush's, so research on niche or non-US markets can come back thin. Tracking your brand in AI search costs another $89/month.

Serpstat

Serpstat is the budget pick for keyword research. Individual costs $50/month, about a third of Semrush's SEO plan, and still covers audits, backlinks, and rank tracking, with 5 projects and 10,000 position checks a month.

What you give up: you get 100 searches a day, which a keyword sprint can burn through by lunch. An agent can't use it on Individual at all: API and MCP access need the $100/month Team plan.

Profound

If what you really want from Semrush's AI toolkit is to see how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews talk about your brand, Profound is the specialist. It covers up to 9 answer engines and includes an agent that writes and reports on that work. You can try it free for 7 days at 50 prompts a day; after that, pricing is quoted after a demo.

What you give up: everything else Semrush does. Profound has no keyword research, backlinks, rank tracking, or audits, and exports and API access are Enterprise only. For AI citation data next to your SEO data, see OpenRush's AI visibility tools.

OpenRush

OpenRush charges by the call, not by the line. That's the difference that matters once an agent is running your research. A keyword gap against a competitor costs 12 credits however many keywords come back, a live search results lookup costs 2, and exporting any dataset in full costs 1. Running a keyword gap against each of those three competitors, the job that used 60% of Semrush's monthly MCP budget above, costs 36 credits, or 36 cents.

MCP isn't locked behind a plan, either. Every account, including a free one, gets 200 credits with no credit card. After that, credits cost $10 per 1,000 and never expire. There's no monthly allowance to reset and no upgrade needed to buy more. The only ceiling is a rate limit of 60 requests a minute and 10,000 a day.

Connect it to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any other MCP client, and the same connection reaches your own Google Search Console and Google Analytics data. Your agent can check which keywords you're losing and which competitor took them without leaving the conversation.

A single prompt like this one runs several tools in one pass:

Compare my site's keyword coverage against my top three competitors,
check who ranks for the biggest gaps today, and tell me which three
pages to write first.

The 200 free credits cover 16 keyword gaps or 40 full keyword lookups. Every tool's cost is on the pricing page.

What you give up: there are no prebuilt Semrush-style reports. Your agent answers the question you ask and can draw a chart when you want one, so the work shifts from clicking through reports to writing a good prompt. The OpenRush use cases have prompts you can copy and run.

Which Semrush alternative to pick

If you're looking for an agent-first tool, pick OpenRush. It's easy to get started and built for agents. Add it in one click from the Claude or ChatGPT directory, where it's a verified connector, or connect Cursor, Perplexity, or any other MCP client with the MCP setup guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to Semrush?
OpenRush is free to start: every account gets 200 free credits with no credit card, which covers 40 full keyword lookups or 100 search results lookups. Semrush's own free account allows 10 reports per day.
What is the cheapest Semrush alternative?
Among subscription suites, Serpstat is the cheapest at $50/month (about $31/month billed annually). OpenRush has no monthly fee at all: you start with 200 free credits, then buy more at $10 per 1,000, and a keyword lookup costs 5 credits.
Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?
For backlink research, Ahrefs is the stronger pick and its Lite plan is $10/month cheaper. Semrush covers more ground outside SEO, including PPC research and content tools. For keyword research and rank tracking, the two are close enough that price and interface usually decide it.
Which Semrush alternatives work with Claude or other AI agents?
Semrush's own MCP starts on the $199/month Starter plan and includes 50,000 API units a month, billed per line returned. Ahrefs includes MCP from its $129/month Lite plan. SE Ranking includes MCP on Core, and Serpstat requires its Team plan ($100/month). OpenRush works through MCP on any account, including a free one, and charges a flat price per call.
Should I cancel Semrush?
Cancel if you use one or two of its tools. You're paying for the whole suite either way, and a usage-based tool charges only for the lookups you run. Keep it if your team uses its keyword, audit, PPC, and content tools every week.
