Ahrefs alternatives: what each costs and does better

Ahrefs' Lite plan costs $129/month for a single user, and a lot of people paying for it log in a few times a month to check backlinks or pull keyword ideas. This post compares five alternatives on price, plan limits, and whether an AI agent can use them, plus what you give up with each one. Every price comes from the vendor's own pricing page, checked in September 2026, and is billed monthly unless noted.

Why people look for an Ahrefs alternative

Ahrefs is still the tool to beat for backlink research, and its link index is the reason people stay. The reasons to look elsewhere are mostly about what Lite, the plan most people buy, leaves out.

Lite shows 6 months of history. Ahrefs' historical link and ranking data is one of the best reasons to pay for it, but Lite only goes back 6 months. Two years of history needs Standard at $249/month, almost double the price.

The team tops out at three people. Lite includes 1 user. Extra seats cost $40/month each, and you can add at most 2. A fourth person means moving to Standard, where each extra seat costs $60/month.

AI search visibility is an add-on. Lite includes Brand Radar custom prompts, but only 5 of them. The AI Visibility Index, which shows how your brand appears across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and other answer engines, costs another $199/month. Content Kit ($99/month) is a separate add-on too.

You pay for the month, not the work. $129/month is the same whether you ran 5 lookups or 500. If you log in a few times a month to check a competitor's links, most of that fee covers days you didn't use it.

AI agents hit the limits fast. If you connect Ahrefs to Claude or ChatGPT, every row of data the agent pulls counts against a monthly allowance, and each request is capped at 100 rows. The next section shows what that means in practice.

What Ahrefs' MCP limits mean for an AI agent

Ahrefs includes Model Context Protocol (MCP) access on every plan from Lite up, which puts it ahead of Semrush on access. MCP is the standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude call a tool directly. The limits show up once an agent starts working:

  • A shared monthly budget. Lite includes 200,000 API units a month and Standard includes 800,000. MCP, Ahrefs Connect, and the API all draw from the same pool.
  • Billing by row and by field. Every request costs at least 50 units. Past that, each row costs the sum of the fields requested: 1 unit for most fields, 5 or 10 for heavier metrics such as traffic. Ahrefs' own example is a backlinks request with three fields at 12 units per row, so 500 rows costs 6,000 units.
  • A cap on rows per request. Lite returns at most 100 rows per request, and Standard 250. To read a competitor's 5,000 referring domains, an agent on Lite has to page through at least 50 requests.
  • No first-party data. Ahrefs' MCP server doesn't expose your Google Analytics or Search Console data, so an agent can't connect "who links to my competitors" with "which of my pages lost traffic" in the same pass.

That's a problem because agents research more deeply than a person does. Where you might check one report, an agent pulls more fields, reads the full list instead of the first page, and cross-checks what it finds. That takes more calls, but it's why the output is better. Under per-row, per-field billing, every extra call eats into your monthly allowance, so the more thorough the research, the sooner you run out.

Ahrefs alternatives compared by price

This table shows the entry plan for each tool and the limit you're most likely to hit first:

If you want Ahrefs' data and the price is the only problem, Ahrefs also sells a Starter plan at $29/month for exploring competitor data and search trends, without rank tracking or projects.

Semrush

Semrush is the closest like-for-like swap for Ahrefs, and its breadth is the reason people pick it. The SEO plan costs $139/month ($117.33 billed annually) and includes 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily, plus PPC research and content tools that Ahrefs doesn't match.

What you give up: the entry plan costs $10/month more than Ahrefs Lite, tracks 250 fewer keywords, and has no MCP access. That starts on Starter at $199/month with 50,000 units a month, and Semrush bills backlinks at 45 units per line, so an agent can read about 1,100 backlinks a month before the budget runs out. Backlink research is where Ahrefs stays ahead.

SE Ranking

SE Ranking fits agencies and in-house teams that track a lot of rankings. Core costs $129/month ($103.20 billed annually), the same as Ahrefs Lite, and includes 10 projects and 2,000 keywords tracked daily, nearly three times Ahrefs' entry allowance. MCP access is included on Core.

What you give up: the backlink and keyword databases are smaller than Ahrefs', so competitor research on niche markets can come back thin. AI search tracking is a separate $89/month add-on.

Serpstat

Serpstat covers keyword research, audits, backlinks, and rank tracking at well under half of Ahrefs Lite's price. Individual costs $50/month and includes 5 projects, 100 searches per day, and 10,000 position checks per month.

What you give up: 100 searches per day runs out fast during a research sprint. API and MCP access start on the Team plan at $100/month.

Profound

Profound is built for answer engine optimization (AEO), also called generative engine optimization (GEO): getting your brand cited in AI answers rather than ranked in Google's blue links. It tracks how your brand and competitors appear across up to 9 answer engines, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews, and its AI Marketer agent researches, writes, and reports on that work.

Pricing is custom. A free 7-day trial runs 50 prompts a day across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and the Enterprise plan is quoted after a demo.

What you give up: Profound doesn't do SEO. There's no keyword research, backlink data, rank tracking, or site audit, so it sits next to an SEO tool instead of replacing Ahrefs. Data exports and API access are Enterprise only.

OpenRush

OpenRush was built for agents from the start, so it doesn't meter them the way Ahrefs does. Every tool has one flat price per call, no matter how many rows or fields come back. A backlink profile costs 9 credits, a backlink gap against your competitors costs 40, and exporting any dataset in full costs 1. There's no row cap to page around and no monthly unit budget to run out mid-month, and you know what a prompt costs before your agent runs it.

It's free to start: every account gets 200 free credits with no credit card. After that, credits cost $10 per 1,000 and never expire, so a quiet month costs nothing. The only ceiling is a rate limit of 60 requests a minute and 10,000 a day.

You connect OpenRush to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any other MCP client, and your agent does the research. The same connection reaches your own Google Search Console and Google Analytics data, so the agent can put a competitor's new links next to your own traffic changes. Ahrefs' MCP server can't do that.

A single prompt like this one runs several tools in one pass:

Find the sites that link to my top three competitors but not to me,
check which of them rank for my target keywords, and tell me which
ten to pitch first.

The 200 free credits cover 22 backlink profiles or 5 full backlink gaps. Every tool's cost is on the pricing page.

What you give up: there's no dashboard to click through. You can still get charts, but your agent builds them from a prompt, so you'll need to be comfortable asking for what you want. For prompts you can copy and run, see the OpenRush use cases.

Pick an Ahrefs alternative built for the future

If you're ready to say goodbye to dashboards, pick OpenRush. Anyone can use it: it's free to start, and it works inside the AI assistant you already use. Your agent does the research, and you can create as many reports as you need, paying only for the lookups behind them.

OpenRush MCP is a verified connector on both Claude and ChatGPT, so you can add it in one click from either directory. It also plugs into any other AI tool that supports MCP, such as Cursor or Perplexity, through the MCP setup guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to Ahrefs?
OpenRush is free to start: every account gets 200 free credits with no credit card, which covers 40 full keyword lookups or 22 backlink profiles. Ahrefs' own free tier covers sites you own but not competitors, and Semrush's free account allows 10 reports per day.
What is the cheapest Ahrefs alternative?
Among subscription suites, Serpstat is the cheapest at $50/month (about $31/month billed annually). Ahrefs also sells a $29/month Starter plan with limited data. OpenRush has no monthly fee at all: you start with 200 free credits, then buy more at $10 per 1,000, and a keyword lookup costs 5 credits.
Is Semrush better than Ahrefs?
For PPC research and content tools, Semrush covers more ground. For backlink research, Ahrefs is the stronger pick, and its Lite plan is $10/month cheaper. For keyword research and rank tracking, the two are close enough that price and interface usually decide it.
Which Ahrefs alternatives work with Claude or other AI agents?
Ahrefs includes MCP from Lite, but Lite caps it at 200,000 API units a month and 100 rows per request. Semrush's MCP starts on its $199/month Starter plan with 50,000 units a month. SE Ranking includes MCP on its Core plan, and Serpstat requires its Team plan ($100/month). OpenRush works through MCP on any account, including a free one, with a flat price per call and no row caps.
Should I cancel Ahrefs?
Cancel if you log in a few times a month for backlink checks or keyword ideas. You're paying $129/month either way, and a usage-based tool charges only for the lookups you run. Keep it if your team relies on its link index, rank tracking, and site audits every week.
